NEW YORK – The Eighth class of the NYC Semester in Journalism (NYCJ) arrived in January from all over the United States. The class of eight students represent six colleges and universities.

These students will participate in the unique semester-long, off-campus study program operated by the McCandlish Phillips Journalism Institute at The King’s College in NYC. The students live in student housing at King’s, where they take three classes, including capstone courses with Prof. Terry Mattingly, a syndicated religion columnist, and Prof. Clemente Lisi, a former editor at the New York Daily News.  

Under the guidance of Prof. Paul Glader, a former reporter at The Wall Street Journal), they also work 20 hours per week in a newsroom in New York, earning six academic credits under and pursuing at least one byline per week for their portfolios.

Brittany Bhulai  

Brittany Bhulai is majoring in Journalism and comes to King’s from the University of Central Florida. She has previously worked as a food blogger and was editor-in-chief at her college newspaper. She is interning this semester at the New York Daily News on their breaking news digital desk.

Jillian Cheney 

Jillian Cheney is a Journalism, Culture and Society major at The King’s College. She has covered campus news for the Empire State Tribune, the student newspaper at The King’s College, and put together “The Weekly,” EST’s print edition. She is also interning at the New York Daily News on their breaking news digital desk. 

Rachel Greenland 

Rachel Greenland is a Communications major at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. She has worked as a news reporter at her college newspaper. She is interning with the video team at Newsweek.

Maya Harrison

Maya Harrison is a Journalism major at Point Loma Nazarene University on the Point Loma oceanfront in San Diego, Calif. She has worked as a reporter and editor at her campus newspaper. She is interning on the news desk at The Brooklyn Paper.

Maria Monteros 

Maria Monteros is a majoring in Multimedia Journalism at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tenn. She has written news and features for her college newspaper. She is interning on the digital desk at Newsweek.

Brooke Mora is a majoring in Multimedia Journalism at Point Loma Nazarene University. She has worked as both a print reporter and done video editing for her campus newspaper. She is interning with the video team at Newsweek.

Natallie Rocha is a Journalism major at Point Loma Nazarene University. She has worked as the news director at her college radio station. She is interning on the news desk at The Brooklyn Paper where she is also working on podcast production.

Elizabeth Winn is a Journalism, Culture and Society major at The King’s College. She is currently the campus editor at the EST. She is interning at New York Family magazine, based in Brooklyn.
