NEW YORK – The tenth class of the NYC Semester in Journalism (NYCJ) arrived in January from all over the nation and globe. The class of 13 students represent 10 different universities.

They will participate in the unique semester-long, off-campus study program operated by the McCandlish Phillips Journalism Institute at The King’s College in NYC. The students live in student housing at King’s, where they are taking three classes, including capstone courses with Prof. Terry Mattingly, a syndicated religion columnist, and Prof. Clemente Lisi (former deputy head of news at the New York Daily News). 

Under the guidance of Prof. Paul Glader, a former staff writer at The Wall Street Journal, they also work 20 hours per week in a newsroom in NYC, earning six academic credits under and pursuing at least one byline per week for their portfolios.

Sarah Dreher.jpg

Sarah Dreher is studying English at Covenant College. She will be interning at the Newsweek digital desk. Previously, she interned for WSKG Public Radio in Binghamton, N.Y. and KTBS News Channel 3 in Shreveport, La. She is currently the editor-in-chief for Covenant’s student newspaper, The Bagpipe.

Benjamin Mandile is studying Journalism at Fort Lewis College in Colorado. He will be interning at the Queens Courier. He previously interned at The Durango Herald and also participated in the European Journalism Institute in Prague last summer. He is a reporter and the managing editor at The Independent News Organization.

Hannah Buczek is studying Digital Media Studies with a Journalism emphasis at Lee University. She will be interning at Bold Media. Previously, she served as a student writer for Lee’s Vindagua Magazine and as a senior reporter for Lee’s Clarion newspaper.

Beth Dedman is studying Journalism at the University of Arkansas. She will be interning at AM New York. Previously, she was a lifestyle editor and a news editor at Arkansas’s student newspaper, The Arkansas Traveler. She is currently the editor-in-chief of Hill magazine, another Arkansas student publication

Mickey Hutchings is studying Journalism at Appalachian State University. She will be interning at Newsweek’s video desk. She also serves as the visual managing editor for Appalachian’s student publication, The Appalachian. She is a news break anchor for Appalachian’s student radio station, 90.5 WASU and the floor manager for the school’s student-run broadcast, AppTV.

Leif LeMahieu is studying History and Political Science at Covenant College. He will be interning at First Things. This past summer, he completed a course through the World Journalism Institute where he worked with The Northwest Iowa Review. He is a regular contributor and international news correspondent for Covenant’s student publication, The Bagpipe.

Carol Wambui is studying Journalism at the Multimedia University of Kenya. She is interning at Religion Unplugged, an award-winning non-profit news outlet that covers religion. Previously, she served as a volunteer for the Harvest Family Church Media Department.

Cora O’Sullivan is studying English with a minor in Journalism at Azusa Pacific University. She will be interning at New Village Press. Previously, she served as a fiction editor for Azusa’s West Wing Literary Magazine and as a staff writer for the school’s student publication, ZuMedia.

Maddison Farris is studying Journalism, Culture and Society at The King’s College. She will be interning at the Queens Courier. She recently transferred to King’s from Butler Community College, where she practiced journalism on campus.

Grant Lancaster is studying News and Editorial Journalism at the University of Arkansas. He will be interning at AM New York. He is also the digital managing editor for Arkansas’s student newspaper, The Arkansas Traveler. He previously served as the publication’s campus news editor and as a senior staff reporter.

Meg Capone is studying Journalism, Culture and Society at The King’s College. She will be interning at the Brooklyn Paper. She is also the city editor for the King’s student publication, the Empire State Tribune, and a podcast script writer for King’s student podcast, Broadway and Exchange.

Amalia Arms is studying Journalism and Political Science at Anderson University. She will be interning at the Brooklyn Paper. Previously, she was a freelance journalist for the Herald Bulletin. She is the current editor-in-chief of Anderson’s student newspaper, the Andersonian.
